Hook Norton Brewery Shires

Nicholas Carter & Alyster Mills

Hook Norton Brewery, is nestled in the rolling Cotswold hills and home to three magnificent working Shire horses. Now, only one of two breweries in the country to deliver beer by horse and dray the dedicated Shire horse team continue to keep tradition alive.

Head Horseman Nicholas Carter has been at the helm for five years turning the Brewery into a flagship establishment, renowned for his high standards both in the showring and at home. Prior to joining the Brewery, Nicholas had a long history of driving commercial carriage horses for weddings and funerals all over the country and has starred in several television and film productions such as Gladiator II, The Crown and Ridley Scott’s Napoleon.

Alongside Nick is Groom, Alyster Mills. Alyster worked with Shire Horses at Hampton Court Palace for a number of years before joining the Hooky team four years ago. His passion lies heavily in traditional working methods and using horses for land management.

Hook Norton Brewery Shires

The delivery team is currently made up of three magnificent Shire horses, all bay in colour with striking white faces and each with four white feet.

Seven year old Brigadier is described as your traditional shire, the gentlest soul with the softest of natures. Standing at 17.3h he’s the tallest of the team and the steadiest. Brigadier is a very versatile member of the team, not only can he be ridden, but he also drives single, pair and in the team.

Often seen working alongside Brigadier is a more bouncy, seven year old Balmoral. Standing at 17.1h, Balmoral is known for his energetic nature and is often seen working with a bounce in his step. Balmoral is often ridden although does have a tendency to think he’s a dressage horse and can throw some interesting shapes at times!

Current youngest on the team is Cromwell, a four year shire horse standing at 17.1h. Cromwell started his education this year and is already excelling in his single driving work showing a calm approach to all that he’s asked of. Later in the year he’ll start working alongside Brigadier who will show him the ropes and buddy him as they head out to country shows, steam rallies, pub openings and carnivals. The boys have a busy event season ahead!
